Complete One react to Newcastle hosting the 2021 Rugby League World Cup Opening Ceremony
Official sponsors of the Newcastle Falcons, Complete One, are excited by the recent news that Newcastle will host the opening ceremony of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.
Avid Rugby supporter and Managing Director at Complete One, Glen Lowes, was delighted when news broke that Newcastle had been selected to host the official opening ceremony of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. Excitingly, the city has also been chosen to host the first game of the tournament, which will be held at St. James Park, a stadium that Mr. Lowes can see from his office window.
As one of 28 cities that bid for matches, Newcastle has won the prestige to kick-off the tournament, billed as the biggest and best in international rugby league. St. James’ Park is one of 14 stadiums across England that has been selected, with the opening ceremony taking place on Saturday 23rd October 2021, with Complete One hoping to be in attendance.
As well as the opening ceremony and the first game of the tournament, Newcastle will also host a series of events with a fan zone and a festival of rugby league, which is estimated to bring in £13m to the local economy.
‘Massive sporting events always provide a great boost to the local economy, and as a company based in the heart of Newcastle City Centre, we are delighted that our city has been given the honour of hosting the opening ceremony and the first game,’ commented Glen Lowes, Managing Director at Complete One.
Held every four years, the games are the stand out events in the rugby league calendar. The 2021 tournament is set to be one of the most inclusive and diverse events ever hosted in England, promoting the three simultaneous disciplines of the men’s, women’s and wheelchair World Cup.
The successful bid is a partnership of Newcastle City Council, Newcastle Gateshead Initiative, Newcastle United Football Club and Newcastle Thunder Rugby League Club. Cabinet member for culture, sport, and public health at Newcastle City Council, Councillor Kim McGuinness stated, ‘The Rugby League World Cup 2021 is set to be an unmissable event, and we’re delighted to be playing a key role in it.”
